Why #boycottTanishq was trending on twitter? Why you should know that??
What was Tanishq Ad up to and why was there so much outrage on a single Ad?? Does it made a whole community insecure??How is secularism connected to this? We choose to remain silent or not bothered until it comes to Us. Until we really get bothered, it would be high time and we would be forced to remain silent then.
Titan Company owned jewellery brand Tanishq, for the purpose of promotion tanishq jewellers made an ad considering the festive season’s collection ‘Ekatvam’. But after the Ad was aired #boycottTanishq trend came up in Twitter in no time and broke the internet. The huge storm of 45 seconds video showcases a Hindu woman married into a Muslim family where the Muslim family is preparing a traditional Hindu baby shower ceremony for their pregnant Hindu Daughter-in-law. Several people called for a boycott of tanishq, alleging the ad promoted “love jihad”. The ad was pulled off air after a section of social media users alleged that it hurts sentiment of some communities. The video though pulled down is still being shared across social media.
The Tanishq Ad was produced by a Bombay based production house named “Culture Film Company” & Joyeeta Patpatia is the owner of that company and director of this advertisement. Turning back unto the advertisements of this brand can be seen as breaking the stereotypes and making its brand identity. But this time what was evident through the immense social media criticism is that India in 2020 doesn’t have room for secularism.
Now let’s take a look on what Secularism really is?? Secularism is the belief that religion should not influence or be involved in the organization of society, education, government, etc. With the forty second Amendment of the constitution of India enacted in 1976, the Preamble to the Constitution asserted that India is a secular nation. We used to be taught unity in diversity since childhood and we have been grown up singing “Hind desh ke nivasi sabhi jan ek hai, rang roop desh bhasha chahe anek hai..” However online trolls have twisted what was once a sweet sentiment into something completely abhorrent. We take pride in adding secularism in our constitution but do we really follow that? Are we secular anymore? The fact is only small section believed in it rest of them pretended to be secular. Now even the pretence is shed.
Now let’s see various point of views towards the TanishqAd. One view was that, they say it just doesn’t happen in real life. Well we can agree that the ad is indeed a fairy tale. It probably represents one out of hundred or thousand cases. Although the ad is a fairy tale –it gives hope! A message to million others out there that “conversion” is not necessary to accept and respect one another. It is a message of true secularism and oneness. It speaks on the values of tolerance, Coexistence and openness to different cultures. Movies, films, TV series they are a form of visual communication that uses moving pictures to tell us a story or teach us something. So why can’t we see an Ad in such a way? The feeling of oneness begins from each one of us.
Another criticism raised was about the choice of religion of the lead. This might be the marketing decision to target maximum customers since majority of women in India are Hindus. This point of view raised was not surprising in today’s world. But what surprises is that this view was raised in a country which is democratic. Because democracy ensures Freedom of speech and Freedom of expression. And what about special marriage act??
A pointless criticism raised was that the company should have played safe and avoided the mess. When you set a trend, when you speak something, or take up any issue which is taboo, you will be talked about. The statement put up by the brand during withdrawal was also torn apart viciously by people who believed they should have taken a stance
When we can take the advertisement in a way that promotes secularism, why to make it a communal issue? The ad created only with the sole purpose of love and acceptance for each other, our community boycotted the ad saying it’s against our ideologies. But how come our ideologies different from what’s there in our Indian constitution. ? Is everything that promotes unity and harmony is now considered to be anti-national?
So now don’t you think the problem was not in the ad, but in the ideology, thinking of the people which we need to change as soon as possible? Being in the 21st century, we should understand and accept that, just like any other human right, right to religion is the fundamental to freedom, justice and peace in this world. If we can’t tolerate oneness in an Ad how will we in society?
IS DUSSEHRA REALLY OVER?
With the dust settled again there will be rise in rape cases. Why are we Indians so selective about our intrication to the details. We do not follow as we preach. On saturday 24th October, 2020 many Indians followed this tradition of inviting 9 girls to their home and feeding them. It is an old age tradition that is followed across India. We Indians cherish it. We celebrate Navratri with huge pomp and glory. Today was the day when the idols of Ma Durga were immersed in water and we bid adieu to her. Have we asked her to take our sins away? Can she do that? I ask you to answer that but on the other hand everyone will now go to eid then chhath puja then diwali and many more. But the question remains the same. Are we doing enough? There have been many hathras styled events and many worse than that. Have we learnt our lessons no. What is it that we don’t understand? The fact that we are so self obsessed and our ego gets the better of us. It is tough for us to accept girls the way they are. How and when will this end. As you write I want you to understand the exhilarating pain of every Indian woman. She is looked upon, teased, asked to lose weight and whatnot. Think for a second if your entire life you are dictated to this, to do that. How will you feel?
The dust settles there. I do not agree. There will be some reposts on instagram, some of you will add relatable images on your instagram story or you will share this article on whatsapp. That is not enough? What I want you to do is become more human and less devil. Be courteous to your fellow women folk around you. Start talking and lend an ear. Do not judge and don’t try to come to conclusions. If she wants to go and cry let her cry but don’t force her to do things. We are a nation of 130 crore and if we take it upon ourselves to look after each other then such miscreants will automatically be punished. We just have stopped harbouring them and I just don’t want you to be a passive reader. I want you to rise and in a time bound manner make this a better place. Just start helping others. That is all I ask. Stand for what is right and don’t justify wrong things. Even when a woman is abused on social media and you try to ignore those comments section then you are no different. I will not so that they will transform into Maa Kali and kill the devils. I will say that remember that they are the one who give lives. They can take it away also. Don’t test your patience. Be courteous to everyone and follow what your heart says. Aurat word in itself means life. Give life and pounder the cream. Never will you feel alone if you help others and remember it is the greatest joy to keep the creator of life happy and smile.
‘ABROAD’… The word itself lightens up everyone’s eyes. Within no time, you have been engrossed into your dreams. Towering glass buildings, clean broad roads, superfluous amenities, better transportation links and oh my goodness the list just becomes never ending!
It is observed now a days, many people travel abroad for getting better education, better job opportunities, or simply for a better standard of living and eventually tend to settle there. Now, it is always good to visit foreign places to know and learn about their development, their progress, their forwardness, but then one must get back to their origin. A cub, after his birth, tends to stay with a pride of lions for the rest of his life, and the same thing applies to most of the living beings. Have we ever seen elephants living with lions; crows living with eagles? The shear reason behind being that, they have a community of their own, they have similar abilities, similar thinking, similar adaptability. If a panda is lifted up and placed in Africa, it will not survive, if not for the artificial atmosphere.
Evolution has given humans intelligence based on which we can make decision, but that does not mean we become unbounded. We took birth in an certain atmosphere and we tend to develop physically, mentally and emotionally according to that. How can we just let go all the adaption suddenly and start afresh? It might not be impossible but it is not advisable.
Indians who move out and settle abroad, never understand that their life has become surreal. They tend to speak negative about their own native land, the land that made them and brought them up with so much of affection. Yes, India might not have those beautiful skylines, the cleanliness, those job opportunities, those breathtaking city views, that level of infrastructure and development. But the fact that we can’t avoid is: The first world countries are who they are today because of the third world countries. It is heartbreaking to see that the people get deluded in the external beauty and forget the true essence of the life India gave them.
The facts are so very infront of us still we act preposterously like for example, have you ever seen a foreigner settling in India for a life time? And now try to don’t defend yourself by saying that India is not that developed but does it have nothing else to offer? Have you ever seen or heard of any country that has soo much diversity, festivals, traditions or culture? Their behaviour seems to be so funny at times! You are born in an country and have been granted citizenship for as long as you live. But no! We will go to foreign countries, spend countless dollar bills and beg them to make us citizens of their country as though we are homeless orphans! There are 100s of people in our country who are showering you with excessive love, care and affection, but no! We will go abroad and then search if somebody can love us and care for us.
These abroad settlers seem to be cowards. They do not have the guts to face and solve the problems their native land is having. THEY SIMPLY RUN! They actually run from the capabilities of themselves they are unaware about. Staying in utopia and showing yourself to be successful is very easy. Rising and shining from dust inspite of the most rigorous situations is real success. A person who thinks much about his nuclear development is not a true genius; but the one who helps his clan to walk on the path of development, surely is! What India wants its people to do is learn, get better and get back to her, make her what she really deserves to be; not just leave her be in the condition first world countries have made out of her. You owe this to her and the people who made it possible for you to fly at the heights you are flying. Do what you have to do but never forget your roots!
The solution is actually very easy. We must think before we leap; But we, just dream!

Respect is our priority.
India is all about culture, religion, language, pilgrimage. And people from India are very much attached to these culturally bound country and have tremendous sentiments in their heart for the religions and so if something is spoken against the religions which may hurt their sentiment they don’t bare it at any cost. Painters, writers, filmmakers, politicians and now even stand-up comedians have over the years been accused of hurting sentiments of the people. However, as now exists the social media world where people raise their voices against injustice and unacceptable behaviour, people keep their opinions out openly in mass and hence the news is created. So social media has somewhat been a platform in terms of India being a democratic country where every person has right of speech.
Nowadays, standup comedians are coming up with their opinions through comedy. We see many restaurants and cafeteria working with comedians for shows. Recently, stand-up comedian Agrima Joshua’s old video has surfaced on the internet and got viral and she has been slammed for “hurting sentiments” of the followers of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Sadly, in the video, Joshua is seen cracking jokes on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s upcoming statue in the Arabian Sea.Trying to be cool enough she also says about the”funny things” that she read on Quora. Someone on website wrote, “This Shivaji statue is an amazing masterstroke by Prime Minister Modi Ji. It will have solar cells which will power all of Maharashtra,” Joshua said. She went on to crack a few more jokes. And surprisingly even the audience had a laugh on her such jokes which could deeply hurt someone’s sentiments
However, with netizens demanding Mumbai Police to take strict action for hurting their sentiments
After the outrage, the stand-up comedian got upset about the hatred she received and instead of apologizing right away she tweeted about the hatred and people entering her space of social media and mentioning her with filths.
Later, this controversy spread massively. Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena(MNS) party whose workers reached the studio where the stand-up video was shot and created. Yash ranade one the MNS workers shared a video. In which the workers are seen kicking and damaging the tables and chairs at the venue. Subsequently, the organisers tendered a verbal and a written apology to the MNS workers for allowing the comedians to air disparaging views on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Agrima Joshua grudgingly apologised for hurting the sentiments of the followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and tweeted that her video has already been taken down from the Internet.
India is home to 1.4 billion people, almost one-sixth of the world’s population who belong to a variety of ethnicities and religions. And these belongingness is from core of heart. A religion for most of the people in India is as important as their lives and also the icon of their particular religion. Maratha icon, the king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, tales of his bravery are countless and stories of his victories innumerable. He himself was extremely secular. Though we are moving towards a modern world we should not forget our culture ethics and to respect our warriors who all their life fought for us. And their sacrifices are beyond explanations. And apart from thier sacrifices they were the creators who made sure to keep our culture into existence at any risk with lot of sincerity. Then we being their followers should make sure we don’t disrespect our religion or the warriors.
