When I ask a question to people about why they use social media? The common answer people give is that they have access to interact with their friends and other people. Technology bought remarkable changes in human life, they increased communication between people, they found organ donors, and they spread news faster and many more. This technology bought meaningful and positive changes to human life. Nevertheless, we are unaware of the flip side of the coin.
Many people think that Facebook is just a place to see their friend or YouTube is just a source to see videos around the world. What we don’t realise is they are competing for our attention. How it is possible? Let us dig down deeper into it.
Large tech companies like Facebook, Google, Tiktok, Instagram, Pinterest have a business model to engage people onto their screens, to get people’s attention as much as possible and making money simultaneously within that span of time. All that we think is free on the internet is not in reality, they are paid by advertisers. The advertisers pay these companies in exchange to show their advertisement.
If internet wasn’t a free source, the engagement rate towards it would drop down drastically. As we, don’t pay for the product we have become the product. Where the tech companies are the sellers, advertisers are the customers and the product being sold is our attention.
Every business thinks that if they place an advertisement they will reach their goal of success early. In order to reach the success in that particular business they need to have great prediction and lot of data.
The tech companies whose business model is to make sure the advertisers are successful in that business track your data, all the clicks you have made, all the likes, screen time, almost everything is tracked and monitored. They know everything thing about us whether we are lonely or happy. They even know our personality type.
There are lot of techies in Silicon Valley learnt to use all the knowledge about human psychology that persuades people and build that into technology. This is persuasive technology, A design technique that can modify someone’s behaviour. Instagram has infinite scrolling feature that persuades people to keep on scrolling until they find something interesting.
Another feature very commonly used is refreshing. You pull your screen down and there will new feed on the top. So the infinite scrolling and refresh feature gives you a reward at a regular basis, when you scroll down there is something new on the screen that looks interesting for you which release dopamine into your body, to get back the dopamine hit you have to keep on scrolling. Now this action of pulling down the screen and scrolling becomes an unconscious habit. This in psychology is positive intermittent reinforcement.
We have surrounded our lives with perceived sense of perfection, we get short-term rewards of dopamine hit through likes, thumbs up, comment etc,. We get a fake popularity that we consider as real. These short-term rewards force us to fall into the loop to do something new to get that reward again. Technology is not only controlling our attention but technologies like social media have changed psychology of kid’s as well as teenagers; they have lost their self-worth through this fake reality. Today’s young generation is more anxious and more depressed.
Processing power has advanced quadrillion times since 1960s but our human brain has not evolved and fundamentally, it would never change. We all think the same that Artificial intelligence will be the destructor of humans in far future, what we need to understand is Artificial intelligence is running our world right now.
The big tech companies have tons and tons of computers stored in a massive room that runs all algorithms from simple task to complex task. However, Artificial intelligence isn’t the problem, it is just like a machine with a define task to do and it learns by performing different experiments to reach the task and gets slightly better every single day.
Famous basketball player Kyrie Irving believed that earth is flat, later when he apologized he blamed to YouTube’s rabbit hole. Basically Kyrie Irving fell into the trap of YouTube recommendation, YouTube’s A.I used recommendation feature to engage Kyrie onto his screen by displaying all the videos that were promoting the flat-earth conspiracy theory, its like the YouTube finds the nearest rabbit hole to dig down deeper and deeper.
Finally, Kyrie was convinced that the earth is flat because all the videos he was watching sound true to him. When he apologized for believing that earth is flat, few student were interviewed saying “the round-earth people got Kyrie”. The algorithm is getting smarter exponentially today people are convinced by the flat earth theory tomorrow there would be new conspiracy theory that people will believe into.
There is lot of fake news spreading faster than real news; It has increased polarization among people, nations are dividing themselves. Internet has become as market place, a market place where human futures are being sold, a market place where you are just a zombie who look at the screen for a long time. This is undermining democracy, if this goes on for years we won’t survive.
People often say that technology has ruined the world but this isn’t true. It is simultaneous utopia and dystopia, you can call anyone from any corner of the world, and on the flipside, your calls could be tracked to use it against you.
Social media was built to spread love amongst people but the business model of different business and their financial incentives have ruin the fabric of healthy society, and there is no financial reason for the tech companies to change their services. There is no law on the tech companies to regulate data and to use is ethically
We need to admit these bad outcomes of technology are because of our work. We can demand the tech companies to built this humanely and not like an attention extraction source. The very fabric of healthy society depends on getting off the corrosive business model.
if we have built something we have a moral responsibility to change it and make it ethically possible.
Reasons why Poornima Gaikwad is the lady you should look upto!
In this OTT world where we search with a lens female characters who set an example in todays world and since City of Dreams S2 is on the way we can’t help but remember one of the iconic characters Poornima Gaikwad! How fearless, capable, crazy and most importantly Lady we can look upto in some points that literally exist in todays world. And the conclusion is Poornima Gaikwad is our absolute favourite- to prove this no doubt very talented Priya Bapat has played the role of Poornima in the series “City Of Dreams”(Hotstar special) and we cant wait for season 2!
1. Her ability to transform
At first she was a housewife, but when her dad had an accident and was out the politics for a while, she tried to take a step in the politics and show she is more capable than anyone in it be it her own brother. She stepped in, transformed herself and shown everyone she has ability to transform herself!
2. She shown who the real Poornima was!
After some time she changed herself to the real one of, she went straight forward to show who she was for once and for real! When people didn’t like her another side she did stick to what she wants always! She did everything that makes her the real Poornima Gaikwad!
3.She was fearless as tigress!
She could hava had it all earlier but just because she was a women she was forced to step back. But when she decided no stepping back unless and until she gets what she deserves. Her motive was to get everything no matter what comes in her way be that her own brother or her own father, she puts herself first fearlessly! She had that aura while walking that she owns the game and we can’t get over!
4.She stopped compromising.
She was a lesbian, but to maintain the family reputation in the society, she got married to a guy. At first she tried to get everything with clean hands, but then the society made her hands dirty. No doubt Poornima had all the qualities a leader should have l!She was playing the game fairly, but the opponent was not fair. And when she decided she won’t compromise it was a game over for all!
She supported her people in every way but when her own people turned back on her she had no option left. Women are consider weak in politics, but she proved them wrong by staying strong and smart. She knew what she deserved!
5. She challenged the patriarchy.
Actions speak louder than words”.
Yes, today in the society they say, men and women are equal, by words not by action, but in the political society women are way too behind men, just because of the male dominated political society. Women are made to remain silent, even if they are capable. Women’ are not strong enough but Poornima Gaikwad set a new example in the world of politics where it us believed that the next politician from every house would be male!
We absolutely can’t wait for season 2 and wait for the magic that Priya Bapat in role of Poornima brings Onscreen! And the Countdown starts!
Carving my own path ft.Indrajeet Patil
Indrajeet Patil well known on social media platform as @champ_indra . By his humourous talent he makes us laugh everyday over Instagram reels.
Indrajeet shares his elite story with Paradox India and we would love to share with you all.
First he starts with How his life started in this world?
He says- I was born on 29th of March 1998 and maybe from that moment I was on a track. As soon as aai gave me birth, she went in coma. Aai’s friend Aruna, I call her mavshi, she is the one who took me to other ladies in the ward to feed me. She is also the one who gave me life at that moment. And that’s why I started with her. I love my aai and Aruna mavshi equally.
Mischievous, stubborn, if I decide to do something I will do that thing. I am that kinda person from childhood. Everyone loves me a lot, but my older sister loves me a lot, if god has gifted me a best friend then its her. As she started doing her first job, she gifted me a hoodie, she is the one who gave me my nickname “chiku’.
Further he shares his education/ school, college life.
He says- From 1st to 6th std I studied in Amar Jyoti School and then we shifted, completed further education in Prerna High school. I was dreaming to become an engineer so futher i took admission for diploma and completed my education.
And now the real story- After completing the education, from that moment I got the craze of making videos and all these stuff. One of my friend had his own channel on YouTube , I used to work with him. One day I asked for lead role he said “channel maza hero me” he also said making videos is not that simple how much you think, you can’t do this.
One thing got hurt, the size of that thing was the size of electrons, protons yess, that male ego was hurt and the journey started. Made a team for a channel named CREATIVE on YouTube channel and started making videos. We had a team, but the number of people who worked were 2 that’s me and Sachin. We were on our way, but then the global pandemic came (covid-19). It was lockdown and then the “ekla cholo” journey started. At first on Instagram there was not a option of reels, so when I used to post videos, people started judging, made jokes on me. I didn’t had an iPhone, I used to have MI phone, people using MI know how many times the phone gets hang. I used to shoot and edit video in that phone.
And then I met Neel and Karan known as “JUST NEEL THINGS” and “FOCUSED INDIAN”. They both taught me to make short, perfect videos, they also tech me today. And the people who used to make jokes on me now started saying, he is our brother.
I started posting continuously. People started to know me. And then my first viral video “it’s powai lake, not your oyo room”. I had 2600 followers and 1M views. One day before that video I said to my friend, that’s it I can’t see any growth tomorrow I will be posting my last video. But then my followers increased to 5000. Confidence was raised and so I decided no matter what we are not going to stop making videos. And after 2-3 months 10000 followers. So I wanted to do something that no one has done before, I posted 10 reels in one day. People gave me an exclusive response.
While shooting a video I broke my phone, that’s it I thought now it’s not gonna happen anymore. But then with the help of my Dombivali friends I started shooting and editing videos in their phone and used to post it those videos with the help of neighbors and society friends phone. This went on for 15-20 days and then I was fed up. But didn’t want to leave this passion. Also, to be honest I didn’t wanted to ask for a new phone from my papa, by looking at the lockdown condition.
One night I called Sandeep know as REALSANDEEPSHETTY and I said that tomorrow I will ask for a new phone from papa.
And the second day my college friends send me a gift, through papa’s phone I went live and unpacked the gift and it was a Samsung phone. And inside it was written “thambu nakos video banvat rha”. This joy was much more than 10000 followers. I started making videos on that phone. We say we should not see the price of a gift but this was 50000/- whose friends do that, they kept my passion alive.
Reason behind the username-
@Champ_indra, my first phone was Samsung champ, and my favourite from WWE John Cena had written on his shirt “champ is here” and I like that that’s why I gave that name.
At last champ indra say-
All these are memories and I love recalling them.
Thank you Paradox India for giving me the opportunity to share my story, also thank you to those who are reading this. Lots of love to you all. As you had a smile while reading this I hope it’s there always. I will try yo be consistent in making videos and I hope you all will support me. Also Poonam ji is not in the video but she is behind my back always supporting me. Soo great full to have such loving and caring people in my life. If I forget to mention someone sorry I just love you all.

How has been Life for Nimi so far?
Nimisha was born and raised up in Aurangabad, Maharashtra – India. She completed her school life in Aurangabad itself. During school days she was much into sports, mostly in Cricket and Table Tennis. She says “during school days I wanted to be a sports person. I was really good in Cricket and table tennis. Moreover, talking about studies I was a backbencher – classroom me kam and bahar jyada ghoomne wali ladki, you can say so”.
We guess backbenchers really find content very well!
How did Nimi land into the Radio world?
Being a Radio Jockey was never a dream or career option she had earlier in life. After completing schooling, during her college days while doingBA, she joined the course of Radio jockey in excitement and later after some time she left hercourse and finally landed into journalism. She took an admission for journalism and mass communication at MGM college in Aurangabad. And during the second-year interviews she got placed in Radio Mirchi. Finally, she was RJ at Radio Mirchi, at that time she was the youngest RJ in Maharashtra. Now by profession she is working as RJ for last 7 years with RADIO MIRCHI itself. As we know, along with that she is our favourite content creator too.
Nimi on struggle:
Nimisha says, “Success is a part of your life. When you work hard, but still failure is the reality of your life even if you are working hard. I have been through a lot of failures during my early days. By now, I have learned to face them. Talking truly for some time I was in depression because nothing was going according to my plan. Starting period of my RJ career was not great, in my mind I have also decided to quit my job and I was like – Utha le re baba. Starting of my content creator journey was not simple either, roj video banao, logo ko pasand aye iski wish karo, and daily failures zelo- I was like – failures: phir se aa gaya re baba, tu jaa re jaa. Being a content creator, I think I was expecting too much from my audience.
But then I realized lekin jab tak unhe aapka content pasand nahi ayega they will not give response or follow you. So, it was not like Ki maine video banaye and me rato rat famous hui. The fact is from 2014 I was making videos on daily basis and ab jake Mehmet rang lay Hai. I am getting good response from people but struggling is always on- it’s like soldier never off duty.”
